Scientific Arts and Crafts: How to Make an Ocean in a Bottl

LANGUAGE: English
LEVEL: Pre-K +
TIME: Less than 30 Minutes
DIFICULTY LEVEL: Easy
CLEANUP: Easy
RECYCLING: Yes

Though this craft is pretty to look at and lost of fun, the reason why I picked it was due to its scientific value. Here we are studying the density of various entities: Sand, Water and Oil. The density of Sand is higher than that of the water therefore, the sand will always go to the bottom, while the water will remain on top. Similarly the density of the oil is higher so the oil will be on top of the water. Thus the sand, oil and water will form separate layers when mixed together.

MATERIALS
  • Clear baby oil or light canola oil
  • Water tainted with blue tempera or food coloring
  • Sand
  • Washed and empty recycled bottle
  • Stickers

STEP(S):
  • Peal off the label from the bottle
  • In 3 separate containers add sand, oil and water
  • Fill about 1/3 of the bottle with sand.
  • Fill about 1/3 of the bottle with water
  • Fill the remaining 1/3 with oil.
  • Recap the bottle tightly
  • Decorate
